It is alive and well in the 21st century. A tradition hundreds of years old, with little change. Horses galloping, riders in armor, lances at the ready. The sound of hooves, the impact of wood on metal, flying debris, and sometimes falling rider.
I've become a fan.
I love watching the preparations, seeing the care the riders take with their horses, and witnessing these battlefield engagements between only two opponents. My camera has allowed me the opportunity to get up close and get to know the riders, to understand just how tough this sport is. The scarred and dented armor tells its story. Seeing riders unhorsed and lying in the dirt tells of the risk. Seeing the event tells of the history. It's a different time come to life, and for me, it has no equal.
